Flag Etiquette
The Flag Code in plain English. Seven rules every American should know — and a few most have forgotten.
Honor the Stars and Stripes
- I
Display from Sunrise to Sunset
The flag is customarily displayed only between sunrise and sunset. It may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
- II
Never Let It Touch the Ground
The flag should never touch anything beneath it — ground, floor, water, or merchandise. It should always be aloft and free.
- III
Half-Staff for Mourning
Hoist briskly to the peak first, then lower slowly to the half-staff position. Raise to the peak again before lowering it for the day.
- IV
Folding the Flag
Fold in half lengthwise twice (stripes inside), then fold in triangles from the striped end toward the union — 13 folds in total, leaving only the blue field of stars visible.
- V
Respectful Disposal
When a flag is no longer fit for service, it should be destroyed in a dignified way — preferably by burning in a private ceremony.
- VI
During the National Anthem
Stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Military members in uniform render the military salute.
- VII
The Pledge of Allegiance
Stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Civilians not in uniform should remove any non-religious headdress and hold it at the left shoulder.
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
